Then winter came. Aaron related stories his dad,
Augustine Machado, told him stories of the cold.
Growing up, Aaron said he never wanted to go
camping and his feet always felt cold. Like that
winter in Ardennes never left his bones.

Jake said the clothes they were issued never
kept them warm. Not only did they battle the
Germans, but the elements with what little
they had.

Fielder in his memoirs related stories of men
having to sleep close together just to share thier
warmth. Then the battles.

Augustine Machado was wounded as a mortor
shell hit near him in a fox hole. He did not
get hit by shrapnel, but was bodily thrown
from the concussion into trees, and woke up
in a hospital.
